Earlier this week, I mentioned to my wife that it was about time that we updated our 1969 version of the Rand McNally Road Atlas that we have referred to on many many occasions before embarking on a lengthy road trip. Her response was that I have enough mapping applications on my iPad. Trouble is, it was the old, more than slightly worn paper atlas that she had pulled out to plan our upcoming trip because it works so much better for planning a road trip than what I have been able to find in the App Store.
I checked once more on the App Store for a decent North American Road Atlas and VOILA, this app had just been placed there earlier this week. I bought and downloaded the app and I was instantly impressed with the level of detail and the simple UI. It works just like the old paper atlas and contains all of the familiar details like Federal, State, and Provincial Parks, distance markers, interchanges, and easy to read highway numbers.
I have only rated this a 4 out of 5 because the app is new and I see the possibility of some exciting updates that are sure to come. What the app needs is a map legend or an explanation of symbols page. A cities and towns search function that would zoom you to the appropriate map would also be useful as well as a distance between cities calculator.
With those improvements, this will definitely be a 5 out of 5.
